US Democrats Push For Syria invasion

Senior US Democrats are pushing the White House to intervene militarily in Syria as clashes continue between government forces and terrorists continue.

Press TV – Senior Democratic foreign policy figures, along with diplomats who have worked for Democratic administrations, are saying the Obama administration must embark on an onslaught against Syria, The Los Angeles Times reported on Saturday.

The views of these figures, including former Clinton administration Defense Secretary William Perry and former Obama administration officials Ann-Marie Slaughter and Dennis Ross, add to pressure on the White House from regional allies and Republican rivals as the Syrian conflict has intensified.

But the White House fears that military involvement in Syria could intensify a sectarian proxy war, and it worries about divisions among world powers and war-weariness among Americans.

Moreover, Syria has formidable Russian-built air defenses that are supported by Russian personnel.

On Saturday, Syrian security forces killed several insurgents during clashes in the eastern city of Deir al-Zour, situated about 450 km (280 miles) east of the national capital Damascus.

Syria has been experiencing unrest since mid-March 2011, with many people, including large number of security forces, killed in the turmoil.

While the West and the Syrian opposition accuse the government of the killings, Damascus blames outlaws, saboteurs and insurgents for the unrest, insisting that it is being orchestrated from abroad.
