Top Japan Official: Radiation Levels 100,000 Times Normal Suggest Full Or Partial Nuclear Meltdown Underway

As I have previously reported:

Live News out of Japan you won’t see in the American mainstream media – NHK in Japan reports TEPCO believes reactors #1, #2 and #3 are breached. SUBSTANCES ONLY EMITTED DURING NUCLEAR FISSION DETECTED – Meaning the reactors have reached criticality and are in a state of nuclear meltdown.

That alert was coupled with news that radiation levels at nuclear reactor #2 had hit 10 million times normal.

Nuclear Radiation Alert - Japan Nuclear Radiation Levels Hit 10 Million Times Normal

Breaking News Flash: Nuclear Radioactive Fallout Alert — An emergency evacuation order has been issued after radiation levels of 10 million times normal were taken at Fukushimi plant no. 2.

Japanese officials retracted the new reports of radiation levels being 10 million times normal the next day. The explanation didn’t make sense as they reported the figure was inaccurate in one press conference because “they radiation level was so high the Geiger counter couldn’t take an accurate reading.” Yet in another press conference the story was the workers got so scared they immediately fled without taking a second reading therefore the 10 million times normal figure was invalid.

Regardless, for the first time they reported the detection of nuclear substances emitted only during the process of nuclear fission implying the fuel rods in the reactor have re-entered a critical state and meltdown was underway.

Now, via CNN we have explicit admission that nuclear meltdown is underway in reactor #2.

This is just in via CNN.

Status report: Reactor-by-reactor at the Fukushima Daiichi plant

Reactor No. 2

The No. 2 unit was “the priority” for the switch-over in the cooling system’s power supply, said Nishiyama. An electrical pump and a diesel generator became operational Sunday, replacing a more temporary pumping system, to power the system used to cool the nuclear fuel inside the reactor.

Fresh water continued to be pumped Monday in the No. 2 unit’s reactor core. The official said that boric acid was needed as a coolant, added Nishiyama.

The plan is to start injecting fresh water, rather than seawater, into the unit’s spent nuclear fuel pool on Tuesday.

Radiation levels in pooled water tested in the No. 2 nuclear reactor’s turbine building are 100,000 times normal, utility company and government officials said Sunday, correcting an earlier finding of 10 million times normal. The reading applies to radioactive iodine-131, which has a half-life of eight days.

Iodine-134, which loses half its radioactive atoms every 53 minutes, was at less than a detectable amount, officials said, correcting an earlier figure of 2.9 billion becquerels per cubic centimeter.

High levels of radioactive substances may have come from “melted fuel,” Japanese Chief Cabinet Secretary Yukio Edano said Monday. This could suggest a full or partial meltdown in the No. 2 reactor, which occurs when nuclear fuel rods get so hot that they melt the steel and concrete structure containing them, spilling out in a worse-case scenario into the air and water with potentially deadly results.

Nishiyama said Monday that the aim is to eventually pump the pooled water out of the turbine building’s basement, though he did not give a timetable as to when that might happen.

The plan is to pump out the tainted water using what the nuclear safety official called a condenser. But that apparatus is “almost full,” as are several storage tanks nearby. Some of those tanks will have to be emptied before the process can occur.

While work has been halted in the turbine building’s basement, an official with the Tokyo Electric Power Company (which runs the plant) said Sunday that people continued to work in other buildings — including a control room, which got power and light for the first time in weeks the previous afternoon — in the No. 2 reactor’s complex.

Damage is “suspected” in this unit’s containment vessel, according to the Japan Atomic Industrial Forum. The reactor’s core is also thought to be damaged, but the building has only been “slightly damaged,” the group reports.

Even though the temperature and pressure levels are “unknown,” the containment vessel pressure is considered “stable,” the nuclear industry trade group reports.

This news is disturbing given the fact that merely two cups of seawater in the Pacific ocean near the nuclear power plant is giving off more than one years worth of radiation in a single hour.

2 Cups of Japan Pacific Ocean Water Exceeds Yearly Radiation Limit

Caution Radioactive Water
The levels of nuclear radiation in the 2 cups of Japan seawater now contains the same amount of radiation that a person can safely be exposed to in a year.

The latest news reports put radioactive seawater over 1 mile from the plant at 1,850 times the normal level of radiation. In the mean time NHK reported that the amount of “radiation released from Fukushima probably already exceeds that of 3 mile island and Chernobyl and there is no end in sight”.

On the other side of the Pacific Ocean, here in the United States, the government has finally removed the gag order and has allowed the press to report that rainwater across the entire US is contaminated with radiation from Japan’s nuclear fallout.

I assert that a gag order was put in place because scientists have been detecting radiation in the rainwater for over a week and a half and have definitively linked it to Japan’s nuclear reactor yet there was not a single mention to the public until now.

Conveniently, the news widespread rainwater was broken over the weekend when the corporate media is well asleep with re-runs of news coverage on auto pilot. What better time to break the news than when there is no live news coverage on the main stream media news channels.

For more on the what the radiation levels mean, the following two stories written by George Washington are great at presenting the facts and disarming the one-sided senseless government propaganda that is repeated over and over about the safety of radiation.

Here is a nuclear cloud spread simulation of caesium based on 1/10th of Chernobyl levels.

As I wrote earlier scientists have measured iodine-131 is being released at daily levels 73 per cent of Chernobyl levels and the daily amount of caesium-137 released from Fukushima Daiichi is around 60 percent of Chernobyl levels.

URGENT: High-level radiation detected in trench outside Fukushima reactor building

TOKYO, March 28, Kyodo

High levels of radiation exceeding 1,000 millisieverts per hour were found in water in a trench outside the No. 2 reactor’s turbine building at the troubled nuclear power plant in Fukushima on Sunday afternoon, Tokyo Electric Power Co. said Monday.

Similarly high levels of radioactivity have been found in a pool of water in the basement of the turbine building at the Fukushima Daiichi complex, raising concerns that radioactive substances may have seeped into the environment, including the sea nearby.

And this….

Radioactive water removal underway, fresh seawater pollution found

Chief Cabinet Secretary Yukio Edano told a press conference that the highly radioactive water found at the basement of the No. 2 reactor’s turbine building is ”believed to have temporarily had contact with fuel rods (in the reactor’s core) that have partially melted.”

The Nuclear Safety Commission of Japan, a government panel, said Monday in its recommendations to Prime Minister Naoto Kan that highly radioactive water in the No. 2 reactor’s containment vessel could have directly leaked, raising concerns that polluted water could spread to the building’s underground and to the sea.

The government’s Nuclear and Industrial Safety Agency also said Monday radioactive iodine-131 at a concentration 1,150 times the maximum allowable level was detected Sunday in a seawater sample taken around 1.5 kilometers north of the drainage outlets of the troubled No. 1-4 reactors.

Nishiyama said there were no health concerns so far because fishing would not be conducted in the evacuation-designated area within 20 kilometers of the plant and radioactive materials would be ”significantly diluted” by the time they are consumed by marine species and then by people.
