Fukushima Cloak and Dagger: Media Forgets They Already Reported 3 Meltdowns
Media Forgets They Already Reported 3 Meltdowns
It was recently reported that a group of researchers from Nagoya University in Japan confirmed that 70 to 100% of No. 2 reactor fuel has melted. This was widely reported by both mainstream and alternative media, see below.
TOKYO — More than 70% of the nuclear fuel in one of the reactors at Tokyo Electric Power Co’s Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant is highly likely to have melted in the wake of the massive 2011 earthquake and tsunami, according to a university research team.
Using special film that can detect muons, which form from cosmic radiation reaching the Earth, penetrate most matter and change direction in colliding with uranium in nuclear fuel, the team at Nagoya University has confirmed the high possibility of 70 to 100% of the fuel having melted in the plant’s No. 2 reactor.
Fukushima’s reactor No.2 could have suffered a complete meltdown according to Japanese researchers. They have been monitoring the Daiichi nuclear power plant since April, but say they have found few signs of nuclear fuel at the reactor’s core.
The scientists from Nagoya University had been using a device that uses elementary particles, which are called muons. These are used to give a better picture of the inside of the reactor as the levels of radioactivity at the core mean it is impossible for any human to go anywhere near it.
However, the results have not been promising. The study shows very few signs of any nuclear fuel in reactor No. 2. This is in sharp contrast to reactor No.5, where the fuel is clearly visible at the core, the Japanese broadcaster NHK reports.
Now my only issue with this kind of reporting is the fact that some of these same media outlets reported back in 2011 that the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant experienced three full meltdowns. See below:
Tokyo (CNN) – On June 7, 2011: Japan’s Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant experienced full meltdowns at three reactors in the wake of an earthquake and tsunami in March, the country’s Nuclear Emergency Response Headquarters said Monday.
The nuclear group’s new evaluation, released Monday, goes further than previous statements in describing the extent of the damage caused by an earthquake and tsunami on March 11.
The announcement will not change plans for how to stabilize the Fukushima Daiichi plant, the agency said.
Reactors 1, 2 and 3 experienced a full meltdown, it said.
The plant’s owner, Tokyo Electric Power Co., admitted last month that nuclear fuel rods in reactors 2 and 3 probably melted during the first week of the nuclear crisis.
It had already said fuel rods at the heart of reactor No. 1 melted almost completely in the first 16 hours after the disaster struck. The remnants of that core are now sitting in the bottom of the reactor pressure vessel at the heart of the unit and that vessel is now believed to be leaking.
Now keep in mind I realize that a lot of media outlets have a mix of original and aggregated stories and sometimes things slip through the cracks like melted fuel. But the sheer scale of the lack of editorial oversight in historical context is alarming. The point is with nuclear, they won’t declare a mandatory evacuation unless there’s been a meltdown and a major release of radioactive isotopes, period. It makes you wonder if this is a editorial mistake or another case of distraction and disinformation?
