Expert: Periodic Chain Reactions Now Releasing Massive Radiation In Japan

Nuclear expert Arnie Gundersen provides us with the latest update on the status of Japan’s Fukushima nuclear reactor #1. The analysis concludes that periodic chain reactions releasing massive amounts of radiation are now occurring at the power plant.

I recently wrote about nuclear expert Arnie Gundersen’s analysis of the “skyshine” phenomena being observed over Japan’s Fukushima nuclear reactor. Today Arnie provides his latest update us with news that TEPCO’s data provides evidence of periodic chain reactions at reactor #1. The analysis means that massive amounts of radiation are being emitted and  the reactor is get very close to a full blown-meltdown.

On Friday April 1st,  Secretary of Energy Steven Chu noted 70% of the fuel in reactor #1 may have already been damaged. In other words, reactor #1 came close to a full-blown meltdown:

From the NY Times:

Reactor Core Was Severely Damaged, U.S. Official Says

WASHINGTON — Energy Secretary Steven Chu said Friday that roughly 70 percent of the core of one reactor at the crippled Fukushima nuclear plant in Japan had suffered severe damage.

His assessment of the damage to Reactor No. 1 was the most specific yet from an American official on how close the plant came to a full meltdown after it was hit by a severe earthquake and massive tsunami on March 11.

Japanese officials have spoken of “partial meltdown” at some of the stricken reactors. But they have been less than specific, especially on the question of how close No. 1 — the most badly damaged reactor — came to a full meltdown.

Mr. Chu, a Nobel laureate in physics, suggested that the worst moments of the crisis appeared to be receding, saying that the best information the United States had received from the Japanese authorities indicated that water was once again covering the cores of the stricken reactors and that pools of spent fuel atop the reactor buildings were “now under control.”

When that article was written, as noted by the NY Times, things appeared to be under control.

George Washington also noted that localized nuclear reactions have already re-started causing “blue flashes” above the plant.

Localized nuclear reactions (“re-criticalities”) have re-started at Fukushima causing “blue flashes” above the plant:

Today Arnie gives us the latest update on the state of nuclear reactor #1 in which he concludes that periodic chain reactions are occurring in nuclear reactor #1, which runs the threat of a full meltdown occurring at the plant. Experts have said such an event was unlikely and as Arnie states “this is something we did not want to happen”.

As noted by Artie the periodic reactions are now generating massive amounts of heat and releasing a very large amount of radiation into the environment.

This is a First for The Asia-Pacifc Journal: publication of a technical scientific paper addressing critical issues pertaining to the leakage of radioactive water at the Fukushima reactors. Our goal is to make this information available to the Japanese and international scientific communities, to Japanese government authorities, and TEPCO as they address the formidable issues of cleanup and safety. But we also believe that the information is of importance to informed citizens and the press in the face of further dangers that have gone unmentioned not only in government statements, but also in the press. Arjun Makhijani’s introduction provides a lucid explanation of the problem and the issues, followed by F. Dalnoki-Veress’spaper. Asia-Pacic Journal.
